OUR HISTORY · ESTABLISHED 1911

More than a century.
A story still unfolding.

A tradition of golf, friendship and club life in Elizabeth Township.

A CLUB TAKES ROOT

From a farmhouse to a gathering place.

Set on a hillside overlooking the Youghiogheny River, the club began in April 1911 when a group of golf enthusiasts acquired 107 acres associated with Colonel Douglas and the McClure family. A farmhouse became the first member social center, and the club officially opened on May 30, 1911.

As the club grew, additions transformed the farmhouse into a buff-white brick clubhouse combining Colonial and Spanish architectural influences.

In those early years, supplying water meant transporting it uphill from the river. Spring water served the club during summer, while horse teams hauled water and ice in winter. By July 1915, water tanks had been installed to support the greens.

THE COURSE EVOLVES

Four holes. Then eighteen.

The course began with four holes, expanded to six, and reached eighteen in 1922. Scottish architect Willie Park, Jr., a two-time British Open champion, designed the back nine.

The completed course opened on July 4, 1922. Taylor Alderdice, president of the National Tube Company, struck the first ball, joined by S.M. Lynch, John A. Caughy and George Duncan.
